About Me:
I grew up near Toronto and spent my childhood dancing, playing field hockey, and enjoying what Ontario’s outdoors had to offer with my family and dogs. I now live in Victoria, BC, where I get to experience the beauty of Vancouver Island and daily access to cycling trails, hiking and rock climbing. Planting is what brought me out west, and I’ve been pretty ecstatic to call this beautiful province home for the last couple of years. Anyone who knows me knows how obsessed with planting I am. Though it sounds cheesy, this job has changed my life—it ignited my passion for the outdoors after four years at Western University; connected me with the most wonderful group of like-minded individuals and my closest friends; and afforded me the ability to travel and dedicate more time in my winters to doing things that bring me joy. I’ve also been spared the dreaded office job! |
Industry experience:
I’ve completed four seasons of planting: my first season started in Ontario during Covid lockdown, and my last three with Summit in BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan. In my last two seasons, I’ve taken on more responsibility as an “Assistant Crew Boss,” working alongside and learning from my incredible and hardworking crew boss. As ACB, I lead numerous “special missions” where I got to step into a leadership role and hone in the skills it takes to run a successful crew.
I’ve been a crew driver for the last three years getting my fellow planters safely to and from the block. This year I also was my crew’s first aider (OFA-3). Summer 2024 will be my first season leading a crew and I’m confident my last few seasons have set me up for success.
What I expect from my planters:
Hard work: I expect you to give your best effort every day. When you’re working hard, you’re making money. A strong work ethic and a “get ‘er done” mentality will get you through the difficult days. Laziness won’t do you any favours in planting.
Readiness to learn: Learning how to plant a tree isn’t that difficult, but learning to push past the obstacles thrown at you in a planting day and simultaneously planting thousands of trees certainly is. The learning curve is steep and you will probably have some of the hardest days in your life on the block. I’m looking for a humble group of people who are willing to learn and can handle constructive criticism well.
Positivity and Support: I’d like everyone on our crew to bring a positive attitude on and off the block. This creates a fun and safe environment where everyone feels supported and wants to do better. I’ve been on crews with an ‘everyone-for-themselves’ mentality and on crews where we all help and push each other to succeed—the latter is what I want for our crew. A hardworking and happy crew ultimately makes everyone more money.
Respect: For me, this goes hand-in-hand with my last point about positivity and support, but I expect you to respect everyone in camp by being kind, following instruction, and—a real important one for me—being punctual. Respect everyone’s time and we’ll get more done.
What my planters can expect from me:
Safety: Keeping all of my planters safe on the block will be my number one priority. I want to control for and eliminate as many risks as I can and help you all feel prepared should something happen to jeopardize your safety.
Organization: Staying organized is incredibly important to me and I will make sure there is a well-thought-out plan for our day on the block, with backup plans should we encounter any problems. An organized crew boss creates a space where planters don’t have to worry about anything other than doing their job, which is putting trees in the ground and making money.
Hard work: I want you to have maximum money-making potential, so I will work hard every day to make sure you are never limited and always have trees to plant.
Support: I want you to always feel supported and encouraged on this crew. As we get to know each other, I’ll try to figure out how to best motivate you throughout the season and help you reach your goals.
Empathy: You’ll likely have tough times on and off the block. I’d like to create a safe space for you to voice any concerns you have or simply talk—you won’t be alone out there!
If what you’ve read about me and my expectations for a crew resonates with you, please shoot me an email, and let’s see if we would work well together!
