About Me:
I was born and raised in Kingston, Ontario, surrounded by an outdoor loving family and friends. At a young age I discovered a passion for adventure and sport. Throughout my teen years I completed numerous trips canoeing, sea kayaking, hiking, and in white water, through an organization called Gould Lake Outdoor Centre. It was on these trips that I developed a personal philosophy, suffer now, enjoy later. I try my best to maintain this mindset in all aspects of my life, especially when it comes to planting. After high school, I spent a year traveling in Australia with my brother, Quincy Saunders, who I then went on to work for as a rookie. Within the first shift of planting, I was hooked. The challenge, both mentally and physically, the highs and lows, the great sense of achievement, self-worth, and the amazingly unique people you meet, these are the reason I come back each summer. |
Industry Experience:
My first year as a planter was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, now I am ready for the next challenge as a crew boss. I attribute so much of my growth as a person and happiness in life to this job; I am looking forward to recreating the experience I’ve had with others. As a planter I valued two qualities, consistency and positivity. Throughout my 3 years, I never missed a day of work, from which I’ve learned that no day is a write off and as long as you are putting trees in the ground every day, you will make money. In my second and third year I was the primary first aid attendant in camp. I was in charge of aiding planters with their injuries and working with physiotherapists to get them healthy again.
What planters can expect from me:
My number one personal expectation is to run a smooth operation that is organized and efficient so as to not limit my planters’ achievements; my job is to facilitate your success. Another expectation for myself is to thoroughly understand each planter’s ambitions for the season and tailor my management style to that. Not everyone learns, grows or is motivated the same. I strive to treat each worker in ways that suit their personality and work ethic to enable them to thrive.
My expectations of my planters:
I expect respect, commitment, and accountability of my planters in every aspect of the job; commitment to their crew, to management, to myself, and most importantly, to themselves. The crew must have a mutual understanding of each other’s needs, emotions and situations. I want the crew to not fear making mistakes, and when they do happen, for them to be accountable and grow.
Goals:
Crew - I would love to create a tightly knit crew that is just as comfortable joking around with each other as they are giving constructive feedback. Although I am a very competitive person, I wish to have a crew that is supportive and empowering for all its members so that they can achieve their goals. Moreover, I aspire to create a group of professional athletes that are at the top of their craft by giving responsibilities and opportunities to become leaders.
Personal - As a crew boss, my goal is to work as hard as I can each and every day to its absolute fullest. That is what my crew boss did, and in return I felt it was responsibility to redeem the favor every bag up. I plan to push my planters to surpass their own goals and also the crew goals. I enjoyed the milestone incentives my crew had (i.e. Crew plants 40k, give the crew boss a mullet), and I look forward to continuing the tradition.
Favourite Book:
The Silmarillion
Favourite Movie:
Gladiator
