About Me:
I’m Sarah! I initially went planting as a way to fund my university studies but I quickly fell in love with the job and the lifestyle it allowed. I have since put school on an indefinite hiatus while I spend my off-seasons traveling. I am currently on a bike packing trip through South Africa, exploring the backroads and single-track of the country’s rugged landscape on my trusty mountain bike. I am also a long-distance hiking enthusiast; I’ve thru-hiked half of the CDT, the Israel National Trail, the Cape Wrath Trail in Scotland. I’ve also done some other bike touring across South Korea, Southern Patagonia, and a brief foray into southern China at the inopportune time of February 2020. Planting has had a transformative impact on my life. It has granted me financial freedom, amazing friends, incredible experiences, and sheer grit- honed from pushing through physical exhaustion, seemingly never-ending terrible weather, and the agonizing boredom of being in my head for over 10 hours a day. Planting is not an easy job, but in my experience, it is an incredibly rewarding one. |
Industry Experience:
This will be my seventh season with Summit and my second as a crew boss. I have planted contracts from all over the spectrum so I have ample knowledge about how to plant and work different land types efficiently and can teach these strategies to new planters. I am looking forward to running another successful and positive crew this season!
What I expect from my planters:
Hard work- Planting can be incredibly lucrative, but only if you put in work. I recognize that everyone has different capabilities; I will be happy if you are working hard. My job is to help you maximize your earnings every day. I will give my 100% effort to make that happen but it only works if you put in the effort as well.
Positive attitude- You cannot be a tree planter without having a positive attitude. The truck will get stuck, your piece will be awful, the bugs will be vicious. It is imperative that, despite everything going wrong, you can retain high morale, both for the sake of your team and for your own ability to succeed in this job.
Perseverance- It isn’t a secret that planting is hard work. You need to be able to push through the frustration and exhaustion that comes with the job to be able to reap its rewards.
Teamwork- To succeed individually as a planter you first have to function successfully as a crew. Everyone pulls their weight and is ready and willing to help each other out.
Respect- You must respect one another, the worksite, and the job. To create a safe and effective work camp, in the middle of nowhere in a small space, we must all respect one another and ensure that the crew and camp environment is a safe, positive and supportive one.
What my planters can expect from me:Safety- Creating a safe environment is my utmost priority. You can be sure that I will adhere to safety protocols, and work to minimize possible workplace risks. I want to help you have an injury and accident-free season. It is also of paramount importance that our crew is a safe and supportive environment for everyone. Bullying, discrimination, and/or harassment are not tolerated.
Support- I am here to support you in any way that I can. I strive to be approachable and am always here to listen to, and support you through issues that you may be having, on and off the block.
Hard work- I give you my word that I will put all of my efforts into helping you succeed every single day.
Coaching- My five seasons of planting have taught me a fair bit about planting good trees. I will commit to teaching you how to plant good trees through clear feedback, ongoing technique adjustment, and acknowledgment of your improvements and successes.
Positivity- You can always rely on me to keep an upbeat, optimistic attitude no matter how terrible things seem. I will strive to keep morale high so that we can be a more motivated, engaged, and resilient team.
