Samara Schiefner
About Me:
Hey, I’m Samara! I was born in Calgary AB, raised in Cranbrook B.C, and spent most of my summers in Kaslo BC. I currently live in Revelstoke where I spend my winters as a volunteer ski patroller and as a volunteer at a Mountain Caribou shelter. In my spare time I enjoy touring the backcountry, foraging, and painting. Some great moments in my life are backpacking in S.E Asia, hiking in the Canadian Rockies, motorbiking in Vietnam and scuba diving in Indonesia. I am working towards becoming a Forest Technician and hope to get my Forestry degree in the future. I think its safe to say that I love trees! Especially treeplanting. Planting has awarded me with financial freedom, lifelong friends, memorable experiences, and pure grit. Being able to push yourself through every obstacle Mother Nature gives you requires, determination, motivation, a positive attitude, and a great crew. It is the most grueling yet rewarding job I have ever had. |
Industry Experience:
This will be my 4th season with Summit and my first as a Crewboss! I was in an advanced Forestry program where I learned wilderness leadership and various other skills related to Forestry. As a planter, I was a crew First Aider for 3 seasons, camp First Aider for 2 seasons, and a secondary driver for 1 season. Throughout my last season as a planter, I was an Assistant Crewboss (ACB), primary driver and rookie trainer. Having the ACB role allowed me to gain an understanding of how to interact with my planters, how to efficiently manage a crew and how to boost my crew’s profit and morale.
What I expect from my planters:
Treeplanting is both physically and mentally demanding. Having a crew that respects and supports one another makes all the difference. I want to build a tight knit crew of planters that can communicate with one another, trust each other, and most importantly share a couple laughs.
What to expect from me:
I lead by example. Everything you do, I will be doing as well. I will always do my best so that you can succeed.

- RESPECT - I expect my planters to respect one another, the job, camp, and the mill. Competition is natural in this job; however, it is important that we don’t let it compromise our attitude and respect towards others.
- WORK ETHIC- I expect my planters to put in 110% everyday. Always try and do better than the day before, even if it’s only by 15 more trees. Talk to me about your goals for the season and I will help you get there. Set short term and long-term goals to keep yourself motivated throughout the season. I can only help so much, at the end of the day its up to you to dig deep and find that inner drive to keep pushing.
- TEAMWORK - WE are all working towards the same goal. With that being said, I value a crew that works hard together. As well as, celebrating our crew goals (i.e., crew hits 30k and crewboss does a mud flop) and individual goals together.
- PUNCTUAL - If you are late to work, you are wasting our crew’s time. Time is money! Make sure you are prepared and on time for work.
- ATTITUDE – Working outdoors is hard. Rain, sun, hail, or snow we will be working. In my experience, a positive attitude is essential for getting through the tough times rather than complaining. Maintain a cheerful outlook for me, our crew, and for camp.
- INITIATIVE - There is more to treeplanting than just putting trees in the ground. I expect everyone to help, on and off the block.
What to expect from me:
I lead by example. Everything you do, I will be doing as well. I will always do my best so that you can succeed.
- SAFETY - My top priority is creating a safe environment for my crew. I want you to come out of the season with tons of money and in one piece. I assure that I will respect all safety protocols in place. Furthermore, it is important for our crew to be a safe and supportive space for everyone. I do not tolerate bullying, harassment, and/or discrimination.
- COMMUNICATION - I’m here to guide you throughout the season. It’s important for me to be approachable, therefore I welcome any questions you may have as well as any issues that arise. I will always be transparent and keep my planters in the loop. Communication is the key to success.
- HARD WORK - Every single day I will be putting in 110% to ensure everyone can reach their goals. I will always stay positive and will motivate my planters through my enthusiasm and passion for planting! On rain days you will hear me belting Queen songs…
- TIME MANAGEMENT - I will be on time with an efficient, organized plan. Time is money!
- COACHING - I have 3 seasons under my belt and a plethora of planting knowledge. I’ve worked a dozen contracts between BC and AB, I am excited to share the skills I’ve learned with a bunch of keen fresh faces!
- FUN - I want to build a positive relationship with my crew and share some laughs along the way. We’re here to make money but let’s remember to have some fun while doing it! Basically, if you’re looking for something that will push you mentally and physically in the best way possible while making a big buck out of it, this is it. And if you want to do it while being surrounded by like-minded individuals and a Crewboss who will have your best intentions at heart, even better! If all of this aligns with you, contact me and let’s do the thing!
